Chitwan elephants and rhinos

- Royal Chitwan National Park -

The Royal Chitwan National Park is located in the subtropical lowlands of Nepal and offers spectacular wildlife and stunning scenery. On your Chitwan elephants safari there's a good chance of spotting the great one-horned rhino and with a little luck you'll also see leopards, tigers and elephants. You're sure to come across a couple of deer and antelopes, not forgetting the crocodiles that glide through the Rapti river. It's a little-known fact that this river is also home to the very rare fresh-water Gangetic dolphins (which can also be seen in Varanasi) and occasionally you can see them breaching the water. Our Royal Chitwan national park accommodation are cosy bungalows on the edge of the park. The main transportation around the park is by the Chitwan elephants, canoe or on foot.

Please note: The activities included in this module may take place in a slightly different order than described below, depending on factors such as weather and your arrival time at the safari lodge. The lodge is also a community project, so some timings are dependent on the day-to-day plans of the villagers.

Day 1- Chitwan elephants and rhinos: Arrival in Royal Chitwan National Park

This module begins in Royal Chitwan National Park. We can arrange your transport for you - all you have to do is ask. You'll get up early to reach the park from Kathmandu or Pokhara, and you can either take the brilliant tourist Green Line Bus or, if you would prefer, we can arrange private transfers. When you arrive, you'll be given a short briefing about wildlife and safety in the park, you can freshen up in your bungalow and grab some lunch.

In the afternoon, you'll have your first encounter with the Chitwan national park elephants and rhinos on your safari. During your elephant ride you will share the elephant with 3 other travellers. You will be perched up high on the back of your gentle giant, you'll be safely out of reach of anything lurking in the tall grass. If you're lucky you'll spot a rhino, although there's a better chance of seeing them on foot on your Chitwan walking safari tomorrow morning. If your trusty elephant spots a rhino, he'll sound the alarm with an almighty growl, just to let the rhino know who's boss...

Day 2 - Chitwan elephants and rhinos: Royal Chitwan National Park

Chitwan national park is at its most beautiful at dawn. The early morning golden light seeping across the plains gives it a mystical atmosphere. The river is even more magical. Working elephants stride through the water, a primitive ferry glides across the river and a solitary rhino grazes in the grass. Today you will enjoy a different kind of Chitwan safari experience; a guided walk through the jungle! You will hike along narrow paths through the forests and plains where the high grass seems almost impenetrable.

It's a little scary knowing that this grass is a hiding spot for rhinos, leopards and tigers, but luckily the experienced Chitwan safari guides know what they're doing. If a rhino gets too close you're quickly directed to scramble up the nearest big tree. And as sweet and harmless as those rhinos may seem, don't underestimate them. Because they have very poor eyesight, they tend to storm into any noise or smell they're not familiar with so it may be wise to follow your guide's instructions very closely. This morning you and your guide go on a wooden canoe and float along the Rapti river, where crocodiles are sunbathinf on the shore. After half an hour you get out and start the jungle walk.

Day 3 - Chitwan elephants and rhinos:  on to Kathmandu or Pokhara

Travel time: approx 5 hours by car

Today it's another jungle walk or a crocodile walk, depending on what you did yesterday. After that (depending on your travel route), you'll begin the journey back to Kathmandu or Pokhara or you can extend your stay in the Royal Chitwan national park with our module Into the Jungle with the Tharu.
